Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the Afghan government to take concrete and sincere steps in addressing Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns, stressing that doing so is vital for achieving a long-term and sustainable ceasefire between the two countries.

Chairing a Federal Cabinet meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister said Pakistan had agreed to a 48-hour interim ceasefire at Afghanistan’s request, showing its commitment to peace and dialogue. “Now the ball is in Kabul’s court to choose the path of peace,” he emphasized, adding that Pakistan remains ready to resolve the issue through diplomatic engagement and talks.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that Pakistan was compelled to respond to terrorist attacks launched from Afghan territory that resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians and security personnel. He said that despite repeated diplomatic efforts and communication of concerns, there had been no effective response from the Afghan side so far.

Turning to global affairs, the Prime Minister praised the progress toward a peace deal in Gaza, describing the ceasefire as a “major breakthrough” achieved through the tireless efforts of US President Donald Trump, along with Pakistan, Turkiye, and Qatar.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for oppressed communities, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that Pakistan will continue to stand with the people of Palestine and Kashmir in their rightful struggle for freedom and justice.

The Prime Minister also lauded his economic team for successfully reaching a Staff-Level Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Stressing the importance of economic stability and independence, he said Pakistan must ensure that this becomes the final IMF programme the country ever needs.
