Israeli Airstrikes Hit Lebanon Despite Ceasefire Agreement

Israeli fighter jets carried out 12 airstrikes across southern Lebanon, violating the ceasefire agreement as their gradual military withdrawal continues, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, according to regional reports.

Lebanese officials confirmed that the country is in contact with several international partners to coordinate the post-withdrawal phase, aiming to ensure security, stability, and compliance with UN mandates in southern Lebanon.

Violation of UN Resolution 1701

The renewed Israeli aggression is seen as a breach of UN Resolution 1701, which was adopted in 2006 to establish a complete cessation of hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel. The resolution also calls for the creation of a weapons-free buffer zone between the Blue Line (the de facto border) and the Litani River, allowing only the presence of the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).

Background of the Ceasefire Agreement

A ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel was reached in November 2024 after a year-long cycle of cross-border clashes that began in October 2023. The confrontation intensified into a major Israeli military campaign by September 2024, resulting in over 4,000 fatalities and nearly 17,000 injuries on both sides.

Under the terms of the truce, Israel had agreed to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, the Israeli military has yet to complete the pullout, continuing to maintain its forces at five key border outposts, prompting growing criticism from Beirut and the international community.

Lebanon Calls for International Intervention

Lebanese authorities have urged the United Nations and global powers to pressure Israel to abide by the ceasefire and complete its withdrawal as per international law. Officials stressed that ongoing airstrikes threaten to destabilize the fragile peace in the border region and undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring long-term security.

The Lebanese government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the ceasefire and preventing escalation, while continuing coordination with UNIFIL and regional allies to monitor Israel’s military movements.
