Hollywood icon Fran Drescher has opened up about her frustration over the early cancellation of her sitcom Happily Divorced, saying she warned TV executives that ending the show too soon would be a mistake — a prediction she says eventually came true.
In a recent conversation with PEOPLE magazine, the 68-year-old actress, producer, and comedian — who was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 30 — reflected on her decades-long career and her deep attachment to the series.
“I’ve played so many wonderful roles, but Happily Divorced was one I really wanted to continue,” Drescher shared. “It’s unfortunate that TV Land pulled the plug after just 36 episodes.”
The Nanny star attributed the show’s short lifespan to what she described as “a poor business model,” explaining that the network failed to give the series enough time to grow its audience. “I told them what was going wrong, but they didn’t want to hear it,” she revealed. “In the end, I was proven right.”
Drescher recalled meeting one of the network’s executives years later, who admitted the decision to cancel the show was a major misstep. “They told me, ‘That was one of our biggest regrets. Happily Divorced shouldn’t have been canceled — it was such a great show.’”
According to the Hotel Transylvania actress, Happily Divorced was just starting to “find its rhythm” when it was abruptly ended. She explained that financial constraints and limited advertising opportunities often prevent networks from giving series enough time to thrive.
“If you’re working with a tight budget, you can’t afford to keep a show running long enough to reach syndication or attract sponsors — and that’s where many good shows lose their chance,” she noted.
Happily Divorced, which premiered in 2011, starred Valente Rodriguez, Rita Moreno, Michael Higgins, and Tichina Arnold alongside Drescher. The sitcom was inspired by Drescher’s real-life experiences and followed a woman navigating life after learning her husband is gay. Despite its unique premise and strong cast, the series ended after two seasons in 2013.
