A powerful 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Friday evening, causing tremors in Islamabad, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Swat, Gilgit, and nearby regions, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Epicentre and Depth
The PMD’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed that the earthquake’s epicentre was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain range, at a depth of 120 kilometres. The Hindu Kush region is known for frequent seismic activity due to its position along the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Tremors Felt Across Northern Pakistan
Residents in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Chitral, and Swat reported strong shocks that lasted several seconds, causing panic as people rushed out of homes and buildings. Fortunately, no immediate reports of casualties or property damage have been received.
Series of Recent Quakes
This is the latest in a series of quakes to hit Pakistan in recent months. In late September, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake had shaken Islamabad and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
In September 2025, a devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan claimed over 2,200 lives and injured thousands. Tremors from that quake were also felt across Pakistan, including Lahore, Murree, Mardan, and Gilgit.
Earlier in June, Karachi experienced an unusual spike in seismic activity, recording over 50 tremors in a single month. Meteorologists linked those quakes to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line after decades of dormancy.
Expert Insights
Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider explained that ongoing tremors in the region are part of a natural tectonic adjustment process, noting that such events are common in areas along major fault lines.
Seismic Safety Reminder
Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious, stay alert for aftershocks, and follow safety protocols in case of future seismic events.
